The 2011 Challenge of Color Blog Hop

Well, what is one to do when the very lovely and inspirational Miss Erin Prais-Hintz of Tesori Trovati and the Treasures Found blog issues an invitation to challenge one's self? One says, "Count me in Miss Erin!" Of course, what better way is there to challenge one's self than by waiting until the verylastminute when one has had three weeks to complete said challenge? Seriously, I need to reassess my priorities and give myself more time to be creative.
Anyhoo, this is the second year Erin has hosted this challenge. She offers twelve colors for participants to choose from; I chose blue. I very, very seldom create with blue. I don't know why I don't, I like blue. The blue color palette Erin chose for me is Sharpened Blue. She has partnered with Jessica Colaluca of Design Seeds to use her wonderful color palettes. Be sure to hop on over to Jessica's Design Seeds blog to spark your creativity with her beautiful palettes.

So, without further ado, here is my necklace inspired by the Sharpened Blue palette:

The vast majority of components I used I already had, and because my studio is such a disaster at the moment, almost everything I needed was on my desk already. I only added the large blue, dyed jade chip beads and the blue ceramic rounds. My peachy colors have a tad more pink to them than the color chips, but I think it's ok. I made the pendant a few months ago with pottery and glass shards I've collected at the beach, along with some sanded grout and resin. It was my first experiment with resin (Ice Resin to be exact). I had been intimidated for years by the prospect of using resin, but the Ice Resin is a dream. The only problem I had was that a bit of blue from the shard at the bottom of the pendant bled and tinted some of the resin a little bit. I think that would have happend with any resin.

Because I was a Last Minute Lori in the creation of this necklace, it's not exactly as I'd like it to be. I am going to change out a couple of components (yep, as much as I love Swarovski, the padparascha crystals need to go; I may replace them with the darker opal beads in the picture below, we'll see) and that's why I haven't attached the clasp yet, but overall I'm happy with it. Thank you for hosting this creative challenge Miss Erin!

So, to thank you for stopping by my little space in the blogosphere on this blog hop I'm going to have a giveaway! Leave a comment and tell me what your least favorite color to work with or wear is and why. Leave your comment by 6 a.m. on Saturday, December 3 and I'll select two commenters to win a handpainted, stained glass Christmas ornament created by moi! One ornament will go to a challenge participant who leaves a comment and one ornament will go to a commenter who did not participate in the challenge. It will be a surprise, but I think you'll like it (most everyone who receives one from me loves them!)! Please make sure there is a way for me to contact you so that I may get your address if you're a winner! I think I'm beginning to feel the Christmas Spirit!

Be sure to check out all of the participant blogs to see their creations, happy hopping!

  1. Your color palette was a tricky one as it isn't always easy to pull off orange and blue but you accomplished it beautifully! I love the pendant you created!

  5. I am so very happy that you joined the challenge, Miss Lori! I love seeing the behind the scenes inspirations and inner workings of a creative studio. And truthfully, mine sounds just like yours right down to the Last Minute timing! I complete one piece around midnight last night to complete my own challenge! ;-) You are not alone.

How generous of you to gift the ornaments! Thank you so much for that!
My least favorite? Yellow. Haven't been able to push that color button yet.

Thank you for playing along in the challenge!
    Enjoy the day!

  6. Wow, love your pottery shard focal! Beautiful!
My least favorite color is probably orange or yellow. I usually use muted tones, and orange & yellow really don't "mute" well.

  7. I love your necklace! The focal is perfect for your palette!

Personally - I have a hard time with yellow!

  8. Lori, I really like your color palette! While blue, it ranged more toward aqua so it's not to "bluey" if you know what I mean. I do like the swap out beads you laid out. I think not just the color, but the texture and shape work perfectly with your necklace style.

I'm so feeling the Christmas love. Just had a fun day with my mom picking up presents for the kids yesterday. Merry Christmas to you my dear!

  9. Such a fun and beachy color palette - I love that the mosaic pendant is made with shards you found on the beach. Beautiful job!

  10. I'm not a blue person either. But I think you interpreted that palette and challenge piece wonderfully.

  11. Cute! What a fun focal - I never thought of using resin like that. I'm scared of it too, but I'll get to it eventually, I'm sure. I think it'll look great if you replace the Swarovskis with those opals.

  12. Lovely job! That palette could have gone really icy and austere, but you warmed it up nicely!

  13. What a sweet piece :) I like it, I think you used your palette well!

I think my biggest challenge color might be orange. Orange is one of those colors I adore, but when I get it I go..hmm... and tend to pair it with brown and copper...

    Anyway, well done you!

  14. Love the necklace just the way it is.. but can't wait to see how you make it even better. My least favorite color... after this blog hop I am not sure I have one... gray would be my answer.

  15. Love the pendant you created with your finds from the beach. I don;t use blue much and would have had a hard time with this palette, but you pulled it together. Great job.

  17. I'm so glad that it's not just me who always seems to be last-minuting it! Lovely result though, my favourite part has to be that pendant. It's a mini-mosaic masterpiece!

  18. That pendent is to die for. Your creation is awesome!

  19. Very pretty necklace and I think it'll look even better with the opal beads. Love the pendant! When I first saw it from a distance, I thought it was blue-glazed ceramic, but then I saw the shards. The different pieces works so well together here. Fab job!

  20. Great pendant..love that you made it with both ceramic and beach glass.Very cool! I love the colours in your palette..but I love the opals, too as I like the more opaque stones with the natural look of the pendant...hope you show it if you are going to change it.

  21. That focal is absolutely inspired! And, yes there is something about the opals that would be more soothing like the palette than the other beads. Wonderful job either way!!

  25. The inputs are definitely the main ingredients and the raw material is important but also the way you sue and bead them together, that is an art.I keep remaking my piece till I am completely sure I could not do anything better.Silver Charm Bracelet
